An Awesome “Must Have” Tool
Makita BDF452HW
I needed to do some work around my boat docks, and didn’t like the idea of using 120 VAC tools in such a setting. I bought this Makita 18 VDC set after a lot of research, as well as prior experience with Bosch, Hitachi and Black & Decker AC power tools. After about 18 months, I have not been disappointed. The Makita is tough, but smooth in operation, and its 18 V battery has great endurance; these batteries charge fast. I was so impressed that I went on to purchase the Makita 18 VDC jigsaw, reciprocal saw, and cut-off/grinder tools, which are just as rugged. However, note that the Makita BL1815 18-Volt 1.5 Ah battery is included with the drill, and it isn’t adequate for the more current-intensive tools such as the jigsaw, reciprocal saw, or grinder; for those you need the Makita BL1830 18-Volt 3.0 Ah battery, which charges more slowly. The BL1830 can be used with the drill (it’s somewhat more bulky), but the BL1815 is keyed to discourage its use in the higher-current tools… a good engineering feature, since Li ion batteries do not like “complete exhaustion”!
Makita BDF452HW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit
This is a fantastic product! Very strong torque and extremely lightweight. If you’re just looking for something for “around the house”, I’m sure you can find a drill for far less and it will work fine for tightening the drawer handles or similar home tasks. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a professional tool or one that can truly rival a corded drill with respect to torque, then this is the tool. Prior to buying this drill, I didn’t give much thought to the weight, but this drill is so light and easy to use it has made me a believer in shopping for a lightweight drill. It has an LED light on it, which is of more value than I thought it would be. It’s really nice to have, but I have to say that I’ve seen better. I know that Craftsman has one with the light on the base by the battery and this seems to work better since the chuck on the Makita actually obscures much of the light right where you need it. I still give it 5 stars… not going to take away a star for a silly light concern.
